Fly out by Wednesday 4 November and come back after Bhai Dooj to avoid the two biggest spikes.
Diwali sends crores of people home in the same few days. Confirmed train tickets sell out early, which pushes more travellers onto flights. Routes with only one or two airlines see the steepest jumps, because there is no competition to hold prices down.
| Day | Date | Festival |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Friday, 6 November | Dhanteras |
| Day 2 | Saturday, 7 November | Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi) |
| Day 3 | Sunday, 8 November | Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) |
| Day 4 | Tuesday, 10 November | Govardhan Puja |
| Day 5 | 10 or 11 November | Bhai Dooj (varies by panchang) |
Diwali is celebrated across India, but some destinations are known for it. Ayodhya's Deepotsav lights up the Saryu ghats with lakhs of diyas. Varanasi celebrates Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima, a couple of weeks later. Kolkata marks the same night as Kali Puja, and Jaipur lights up its old-city markets.
Diwali, or Deepavali, is the Hindu festival of lights. It celebrates the victory of light over darkness and, in North India, Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya. Families light diyas, perform Lakshmi Puja and gather at home, which is why travel demand peaks that week.
