Chhath brings the sharpest domestic fare spike of the year on routes into Bihar. Lakhs of people working in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad travel home in the same week, and confirmed train tickets sell out months ahead. Airlines add extra flights, but Patna, Darbhanga and Gaya have limited airport capacity, so demand still outstrips supply.

Patna sees the largest gathering, with lakhs of devotees on the Ganga ghats. Varanasi draws a similar crowd, and Darbhanga in the Mithila region is among the most Chhath-observant parts of Bihar. Ranchi and other Jharkhand towns hold major celebrations too. Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Kolkata now host large ghat ceremonies for their Bihari and Purvanchali communities.
Chhath Puja is a four-day Hindu festival devoted to the sun god Surya and Chhathi Maiya. It falls on Kartik Shukla Shashthi, shortly after Diwali, and is also called Surya Shashthi or Dala Chhath. Devotees fast and stand in rivers or ponds to offer arghya to the setting and rising sun.
